What is Slip Joint Or Sliding Joint? Construction, Operation, and Functions Of Sliding Joint.

SLIP JOINT OR SLIDING JOINT

Slip Joint Or Sliding Joint is a device used in a vehicle that compresses or expand itself when the rear wheels encounter irregularities on the road. The propeller shaft is connected between the transmission main shaft and the differential pinion shaft, It is to be noted here that the engine and the transmission are more or less rigidly attached to the car frame. The rear axle housing, with wheels and differential, is attached to the frame by springs.

Construction

A slip joint consists of external splines on one shaft and matching internal splines on the other hollow shaft. The splines causing the two shafts to rotate together and also permit them to move longitudinally. This compensates for any change of length of the propeller shaft so the rear axles move toward or away from the car frame.

Operation

When the rear wheels encounter irregularities on the road, the springs compress or expand. The differential, with rear axle housing and wheel, moves up and down. This not only changes the angle of the drive but also changes the length of the propeller shaft. The universal joint permits variation in the angle of the drive. The slip joint permits the effective length of the propeller shaft to change. If there is no slip joint, the propeller shaft would buckle or break.

Functions Of Sliding Joint

When the rear springs compress, the differential rises up and the propeller shaft is shortened. When the springs again expand, the differential returns to its original position and propeller shaft gets its original length. Therefore, a slip joint is used in the transmission system to compensate for the change in length of the propeller shaft. In some vehicles using Hotchkiss drive, the slip joint lies between the propeller shaft and the universal joint connecting the propeller shaft with the transmission main shaft. In some vehicles, the slip joint lies between the transmission main shaft and the universal joint. In cars provided with a torque tube drive, a slip joint is not always necessary.
